Mary Solitario was introduced to Christendom College her freshman year as the recipient of the Thomas S. Vander Woude Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship, instituted in 2010, is awarded to scholar-athletes who not only display their athletic ability but also strive to develop Christ-like leadership as both athletes and students on campus. (To learn more about this scholarship, click here) Throughout her four years here, Solitario has showed to the school why she is an excellent fit for this scholarship.
Originally from Springfield, MA, Solitario has been a powerful presence for Christendom Athletics. Solitario has started for Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball, and is the captain of the Volleyball and Softball teams currently. Solitario is the starting pitcher for the Women’s Softball team and has lead them to gain two winning seasons these last few years. A leader in all of these sports, Solitario views her role as a very important one, stating, “I want to be a strong female leader on this campus- many women here do not realize how much they can accomplish. It is easy to forget that we too can be great on the field and court. I want to show others that physical strength and excellence is not just for men.”
However, Solitario’s success is not just on the field. She excels in academics, earning placement on the Dean’s list for the past three semesters. She also is very involved around campus, serving as a Resident Assistant and as an officer for the Students for Life. Solitario enjoys taking part in the many different intramural sports offered at Christendom.
Balancing all these different commitments is not easy but Solitario views athletics as an integral part of her success here at Christendom. “Athletics at Christendom are another important part of having an ordered and balanced life for me; they force me to plan out my so that I give enough time to my other obligations.”
