Crusaders Drop Battle Against Royals
Front Royal, Va.- The Christendom men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 72–67 decision to NCAA Division III opponent Regent on Saturday afternoon, as a tightly contested matchup swung in the Royals' favor down the stretch. The Crusaders trailed 32–28 at halftime and battled back from a double-digit second-half deficit, but were unable to complete the comeback.
Christendom set the tone early, jumping out to an opening lead behind strong defensive energy and balanced scoring. Regent answered quickly, evening the score and settling the game into a back-and-forth rhythm for the remainder of the first half. Neither side was able to create separation, with both teams trading baskets and momentum before Regent edged ahead late to take a four-point advantage into the break.
The Royals came out of halftime with renewed momentum, gradually building their lead and pushing it to as many as 12 points midway through the second half. Christendom refused to fold, responding with a determined surge that brought the game back within one possession with just over five minutes remaining. Each time the Crusaders threatened to take control, Regent answered with timely scoring, maintaining its edge until the final horn.
Bobby Vander Woude led all scorers with 20 points, adding 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals in an aggressive all-around performance. John Fowler followed with 15 points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers while also recording 3 assists and 3 steals. Inside, Daniel Schultz provided a steady presence, finishing with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks, anchoring the Crusaders on both ends of the floor.
Christendom also received solid contributions from Michael Vander Woude, who scored 9 points and blocked 2 shots, and Luke Vander Woude, who chipped in 7 points off the bench while going 3-of-5 at the free-throw line. Luke Rossbattled on the glass, pulling down 9 rebounds to help keep the Crusaders competitive during their late push.
Despite shooting 38.6 percent from the field and holding Regent in check defensively for long stretches, Christendom could not overcome the Royals' timely offense in the closing minutes. The Crusaders' resilience was evident throughout, but the final responses from Regent proved to be the difference in the 72–67 setback.
