Late Game Heroics from Vander Woude Propel Crusaders Past Centurions
Front Royal, Va.- Christendom Men's Basketball delivered another dramatic finish Saturday afternoon, defeating conference opponent Bucks County 92–90 at home in a thriller that came down to the final possession. The Crusaders erased multiple double-digit deficits before senior Bobby Vander Woude provided the decisive basket in the closing seconds.
The first half was a tightly contested battle, featuring consistent lead changes and offensive execution from both sides. John Fowler set the tone early with his versatility, while Bobby Vander Woude and Daniel Schultz provided steady scoring inside and out. Neither team was able to create separation, and the game went into halftime deadlocked at 42–42.
Bucks County found its offensive rhythm early in the second half, building a 10-point lead with 16 minutes to play. Christendom responded immediately with an 11–1 run over the next two minutes, sparked by defensive stops and transition opportunities, to even the score. The Centurions answered again, stretching the lead to 77–65 with nine minutes remaining.
This time, the Crusaders mounted a methodical comeback rather than a quick surge. They chipped away possession by possession, controlling the glass and getting to the free-throw line. The breakthrough moment came at the 3:41 mark when Luke Vander Woude drilled a three-pointer to tie the game at 81–81. From there, the teams traded baskets in a tense final stretch until the score stood tied at 90–90 with 19 seconds remaining and the ball in Christendom's hands.
As he had earlier in the season on the road against Regent, Bobby Vander Woude once again delivered in the clutch. The senior guard attacked the rim and converted a go-ahead layup with three seconds to play, finishing off a stellar 33-point performance. The Crusaders then came up with one final defensive stop to seal the 92–90 victory.
Vander Woude led the way with 23 points, nine rebounds, and three assists while going 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. Fowler filled the stat sheet with 18 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and four steals in an all-around effort. Edmund Thomas provided a huge lift off the bench with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards. Luke Vander Woude added 13 points and six rebounds, and Schultz contributed 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
Christendom dominated the glass with 49 total rebounds and assisted on 21 field goals in the hard-fought conference win.
