Women’s Softball Opens Season with Double-Header at Notre Dame of Maryland University
In their first game back from an eight year sabbatical, the Lady Crusaders were swept by the Notre Dame Gators in a double header Wednesday afternoon.
In their first game back from an eight year sabbatical, the Lady Crusaders were swept by the Notre Dame Gators in a double header Wednesday afternoon. The Crusaders began the first inning with a run from sophomore Bridget Handy. Handy was walked and after stealing second base, she advanced to third. Handy came home on a passed ball, not only scoring the first run of the season but also giving the Lady Crusaders their first lead of the season as well. Sophomore Katie Kelly also scored a run for the Crusaders in the game of off a hit from Noelle Harrington. The Crusaders lost the first game 19-2. In the second game, the Crusaders were able to hold off their opponents for the first two innings but ended up losing the game 12-0. Mary Solitario, the starting pitcher, pitched 8 strikeouts in the 8 innings played.
Tawny Cevora lead Notre Dame offense, scoring six runs in the two games as well batting in another six runs. Cervora also pitched, pitching six strikeouts in four innings, giving up both Christendom runs. Ashley Fallon pitched the second game for Notre Dame, recording ten strikeouts in four score-less innings.
While the Notre Dame Gators were a tough match for the Christendom Crusaders, these two games showed the potential of this start-up team. Assistant Coach John David Speer stated after the games, “The girls were very spirited and despite the outcome, there were many positive elements from which to build on.”
