Crusaders Split Doubleheader with Williamson in Sunday Thriller
FRONT ROYAL, Va. — Christendom Baseball improved to 10-14 on the season after splitting a dramatic home doubleheader with the visiting Williamson Mechanics on Sunday afternoon. The Crusaders walked off Game 1 in a 10–9 shootout before falling in extra innings in Game 2, 3–2.
Front Royal, VA – The Christendom College baseball team split an exciting doubleheader against the Williamson Mechanics on Sunday, April 13, taking the first game 10-9 and falling short in the second game 3-2.
Game 1: Christendom 10, Williamson 9 (7 innings)
The Crusaders excelled offensively in the first game, with consistent contributions from the entire lineup. Matt O'Hara (Sophomore/ Hershey, PA) led the charge, scoring 2 runs and delivering 3 hits with 3 RBIs, including a double. Joe Romero (Sophomore/ Valley Center, CA) also contributed significantly, tallying a run, 2 hits, and 2 RBIs, and hitting a double as well. Gus Coleman (Junior/ Milwaukee, WI) started on the mound, pitching 5.2 innings, while Peter Sullivan took over in the sixth inning to shut down the Mechanics and prevent further scoring.
How It Happened
The Mechanics scored the game's first run in the opening inning, with the Crusaders holding strong defensively to limit the damage. Christendom struggled offensively in the bottom of the first. Williamson added another run in the second inning to extend their lead to 2-0, despite the Crusaders putting runners on base.
In the third inning, the Crusaders' clean fielding and Coleman's consistent pitching kept the Mechanics off the scoreboard. Doubles from O'Hara and Romero sparked a surge for Christendom in the bottom of the third, bringing home 4 runs to take a 4-2 lead.
Both teams delivered a scoreless fourth inning, but the Mechanics tied the game 4-4 with 2 runs in the fifth inning. Williamson broke through in the sixth inning, scoring 5 runs to take a commanding 9-4 lead.
Heading into the final inning, Sullivan struck out Williamson's first hitter and set the tone for a strong defensive showing. The Crusaders quickly secured the next two outs, then rallied on offense. With 2 outs, Christendom brought in 5 runs to tie the game. Edmund Thomas (Freshman/ Corpus Christi, TX) sealed the victory with a walk-off single down the left field line, driving in the winning run for a thrilling 10-9 triumph.
Game 2: Williamson 3, Christendom 2 (8 innings)
In the second game, Romero took the mound and pitched all 8 innings, recording 4 strikeouts. Thomas led the offense with 3 hits and 1 run, while Coleman's clutch hit contributed 2 RBIs.
How It Happened
The first four innings were uneventful, as both teams displayed strong defense and left the scoreboard blank. The Crusaders showcased exceptional defense in the fourth inning, securing 3 outs with only 5 pitches.
The Mechanics opened the scoring in the fifth inning with a home run, followed by another run to take a 2-0 lead. Neither team scored in the sixth inning.
The Crusaders found their rhythm in the bottom of the seventh, with a single from Coleman driving home Thomas and George Storey (Sophomore/ Amissville, VA) to tie the game 2-2, sending the contest into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Crusaders held Williamson to just 1 run. Despite putting runners on base in the bottom of the inning, Christendom couldn't capitalize, and the Mechanics edged out a 3-2 victory.
Next Up: The Crusaders will host their rival Patrick Henry College at Bing Crosby Stadium on Tuesday, April 25, for their final home games of the 2025 season. First pitches are at 4PM and 6PM.
